Kazakhstan will invest $100 million in construction of a plant producing nuclear fuel, KazTAG reports citing head of KazAtomProm National Atomic Company Vladimir Shkolnik. “51 percent in the project is owned by Kazakhstan and 49 percent is owned by France. The total investment are $200 million, $100 million from each party,” Shkolnik said. According to him, the construction will start in 2012 and will be completed by 2014. It is planned to sell the plant's produce at the markets of South-East Asia. The plant's capacity will be 400 tons of fuel per year. Kazakhstan and France have already agreed on construction of the nuclear fuel plant in East-Kazakhstan oblast. “We have obtained the following results: enhancement of cooperation between AREVA and KazAtomProm via signing of the contract on construction of the nuclear fuel plant. Construction is to be started in the middle of 2012,” French Minister of Industry, Energy and the Digital Economy Eric Besson said at the press-conference after his trip to Kazakhstan on November 5. According to him, the plant is to be constructed in East-Kazakhstan oblast. Besides, Besson said that KazAtomProm will construct rare-earth metals laboratory jointly with one of the French companies. “Kazakhstan has reserves of strategic metals required for our main industry. I am very happy that we have a very close partnership in this area. Our objective is to establish new joint projects,” he said.
