Kazakhstan and Turkey have the highest suicide level among 15 to 19 year old in the world, Tengrinews reports citing the Director of the Science and Research Center Molodezh (Youth) Zhanar Bukanova.

Suicide is the number one cause of premature death among 15-19 y.o. in Kazakhstan and Turkey.

“According to the UNICEF and the WHO data for 2012 and 2013, Kazakhstan was in the 2nd place for suicides among teenage boys and in the 1st place among teenage girls. In terms of mortality rate among 10-14 y.o. boys and girls, Kazakhstan was in the 1st place,” Bukanova said.

The director of the research center cited international experts and said that Kazakhstan had the highest suicide death rate in the world. “Suicide makes up to 12.2% of the total death instances among 15-49 y.o. Kazakhstanis. In comparison, ischemic heart desease makes 11.2%, car accidents – 8.5% and stroke – 4.4%,” Bukanova explained.

Kazakhstani psychiatrists in cooperation with the UNICEF worked on a research among Kazakhstani teens and children to identify the main causes of the suicides. “The research supported by the UNICEF was conducted in five Kazakhstani cities among 1700 teenagers. The research identified social issues as the main reason for suicide among teens. In particular, it is family problems and problems at school where teens feel insecure. Many teens feel that no one hears them out,” a psychiatrist Sagat Altynbekov told a Tengrinews reporter in an interview. Italian researcher that took part in the study detected a certain tendency among Kazakhstani parents. In average, according to the study, Kazakhstani parents spend only 20 minutes of quality time with their children.
