Tengrinews.kz - Scientists from Osaka University in Japan have studied the effects of jujube seeds as a potential treatment for dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases. The study was published in the scientific journal eLife, according to Gazeta.ru.
Jujube is traditionally used in Chinese medicine as a therapeutic remedy.
In experiments, researchers gave hot extracts of dried jujube seeds to mice with Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and Lewy body dementia.
Animals treated with the extract showed signs of cognitive and motor function recovery.
Furthermore, after consuming jujube seed powder, the cognitive abilities of the treated mice even exceeded those of healthy mice in the control group.
According to the researchers, compounds in the plant may suppress cellular aging and improve mental abilities to the level of young individuals.
"We hope that our findings will lead to the development of preventive treatments for dementia, which middle-aged and elderly individuals could use at their discretion," the study authors said.
