Tengrinews.kz - A rare wild cat, the Pallas's cat (manul), has been recorded in the rocky massifs of the Shet and Aktogay districts.
As detailed in the official Instagram account of the Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan (ACBK), 19 camera traps have been set up in the region since autumn 2023, with the manul appearing in only two of them over the year.
"Pallas's cats were captured by only two camera traps, as most of them were set outside the main habitat to determine the northern range of the manul in the Karaganda region. The area may be unsuitable for them due to heavy winter snowfall," explained Ilya Smelyansky, a researcher at the ACBK.
The camera traps also recorded the presence of lynxes and a stone marten, while the Kazakh argali was detected in 17 of the 19 traps, both of which are listed in the Red Book of Kazakhstan.
To continue monitoring the distribution of the manul and other rare animals in the Karaganda region, 27 camera traps have been set up for the next year.
Earlier, snow leopards were caught on a camera trap in Eastern Kazakhstan.
