Tengrinews.kz - Tourists in the Maldives are reporting an increase in insect bites this season, specifically from sand fleas that lay larvae under the skin.

These are sand fleas-parasites that live in sand and coastal areas.

"Many tourists only learn about these harmful insects upon arrival, when they experience severe discomfort. Bites lead to swelling, itchy welts all over the body, and in some cases, fever," reports the Telegram channel Shot.

The biggest trouble comes from female sand fleas, which can cause a serious condition known as tungiasis. The flea burrows under the skin and attaches firmly to small blood vessels, causing pain and itching. After a few days, this can lead to significant swelling at the site.

The flea typically lives on the human body for no more than a week (6-7 days). During this time, it grows considerably in size, eventually turning into a white, pea-sized lump. After 7 days, the pea bursts, releasing eggs, and the flea dies. Complete removal of tungiasis requires surgical intervention to excise the affected area along with the larvae.

Sand fleas are found throughout Southeast Asia, many African countries, and Central American islands. They are particularly active in the evening when they begin to hunt. Tourists are advised not to walk barefoot on beaches and to apply special protective ointments to exposed skin. Travelers are also encouraged to get all necessary vaccinations before their trip and to wear closed clothing while in these exotic locations.
