Tengrinews.kz - About 17 billion cubic meters of water have been directed into the Caspian Sea via the Zhaiyk River.

“Since the beginning of the year, 16.7 billion cubic meters of water have been directed into the Caspian Sea through the Zhaiyk River,” noted the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.

According to the ministry, the river’s average long-term flow is 9.46 cubic kilometers.

“But this year, the volume of water has exceeded the average long-term norm. It should be noted that the river’s flow is determined by the amount of water released from the Iriklinsky reservoir in Russia,” the statement explains.

According to the information, since the beginning of this year, representatives of the ministry have held 28 meetings with colleagues from Russia, China, and Central Asian countries on transboundary river issues.

“Negotiations on regulating water volumes during the flood season will be conducted in an intensified manner,” noted the official representative of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, Moldir Abdualiyeva, as quoted in the statement.
