Tengrinews.kz - The water level in the Caspian Sea will always fluctuate, and there are no signs that the body of water will disappear. This was stated by oceanologist Vladimir Shevchenko to RIA.

"The history of changes in the Caspian level has been scientifically researched for about 200 years. It has been noted that the fluctuations were indeed very large, sometimes by dozens of meters. The issues have still not been definitively resolved. The balance between evaporation and river inflow is crucial here," the scientist explained.

He pointed out that the problem with the Aral Sea was different. The Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers were diverted for cotton fields, and under arid climate conditions, the sea began to disappear.

"In contrast, the Caspian Sea is fed by rivers such as the Volga, which flows over a large East European platform, and the flow has not changed significantly; it has become regulated," said Shevchenko.

The scientist emphasized that the fluctuations in the water level of the Caspian Sea are primarily caused by natural factors, and thus they "have been and will continue to be."

"Of course, there is some disorder in the supply of certain components of the flow compared to what it was before the construction of the cascade of reservoirs, but nonetheless, there has been no drastic change that would lead to disappearance," said Shevchenko.

Earlier, Dmitry Kirillov, Head of the Federal Agency for Water Resources of Russian Federation, stated to RIA that the fluctuations in the Caspian Sea's water level are cyclical in nature, and according to one of the forecast, it may start to rise again by the end of the 21st century.

The Caspian Sea experienced low water levels from the 1930s to the 1970s, after which the level began to rise. From 1998 to 2000, the level once again started to decrease.
