Akim (Governor) of Zhambyl oblast reported to Kazakhstan President Nazarbayev on the results of restoration works after the devastating January storm, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Kazakhstan President’s press-service. According to the Akim, almost all the storm-hit facilities have been restored. Their total number is 4,700. The roofs of the buildings have been repaired, as well as over 1 thousand of power line poles. The total damage has been evaluated at 4.5 billion tenge ($30 million). During the meeting with Nursultan Nazarbayev the Akim of Zhambyl oblast also reported on the results of the social and economic development of the region in 2012 and the preliminary results of the first two months of 2013. According to him, the oblast’s GRP (gross regional product) grew 9.7 percent, and growth in the construction sector made 67 percent. The volume of investments into the regional economy increased by 32 percent. The storm hit Zhambyl oblast on January 12, 2013 and left Zhanatas and Karatau towns and several villages without electricity, water, gas and communications. Roofs were fully or partially ripped off from 425 multi-storey facilities, including 158 multi-storey residential buildings, 37 educational and 23 healthcare facilities. Nearby Taraz city was affected by storm as well: its power lines were damaged, roofs of many houses, hospitals, schools were ripped off, trees and road signs were scattered in the streets.
