Kazakhstan’s Agriculture Ministry has calculated the damage caused by fires in 9 months of 2012, Tengrinews.kz reports citing chairman of the Commission of Forestry and Hunting Management Yerlan Nyssanbayev as saying at the Commission’s meeting. “This year the situation with wildfires caused by abnormal heat has been complicated. As of today we had 613 cases of wildfires at the area of 5,313 hectares, which is more than last year. The damage caused by wildfires made 531.6 million tenge ($3.5 million),” Yerlan Nyssanbayev said. The biggest area damage was caused by wildfires in Pavlodar oblast: 1,452 hectares which is25 percent of the total area of fires in Kazakhstan. Fire burnt 1,441 hectares (24 percent of the total fires area) in Kostanay oblast and 1,256 hectares (22 percent) in Akmola oblast. 76 percent of all fire cases were forest-and-steppe fires. “A lot of cases of steppe fires jumping to forests were registered in Akmola, Almaty, Atyrau, East-Kazakhstan, Kostanay and North-Kazakhstan oblasts. Measures taken by regional administrations to prevent and eliminate fires were not sufficient,” the Commission’s chairman said. According to him, lack of fire-fighting equipment in villages hinders timely quenching of steppe fires. “Oblast administrations have to take measures to supply regional and village administrations with fire-fighting equipment.” Nyssanbayev suggested to introduce a rating assessment of activities of local executive authorities for protection of forests from fires. According to the Commission, the least equipped forestries are located in Aktobe oblast (43 percent), Atyrau oblast (46 percent), East-Kazakhstan oblast (47 percent), Pavlodar oblast (54 percent) and South-Kazakhstan oblast (52 percent).
