Uzbekistan cuts gas supply to Kazakhstan

Uzbekistan has cut gas supplies to South Kazakhstan Oblast, leaving many Kazakhstan residents without gas for cooking and heating, Tengrinews reports. The normal gas supply rate is 430 thousand cubic meters per hour, while the cuts reduced it to 120 thousand cubic meters per hour in the region. According to Lesbek Serikbayev, Deputy Head of the Energy Department of the Housing and Public Utilities Administration of South Kazakhstan Oblast, the reduction caused a drop of pressure in the gas pipes cutting off several thousand residents of Shymkent, the largest citing in southern Kazakhstan. According to Uzbekistan, the supplies were reduced because of some technical problem at the gas pipeline in Uzbekistan and the problem is being fixed. Kazakhstan authorities have taken steps to remedy the situation for the South Kazakhstan Oblast residents. They managed to bring the gas flow to 262 thousand cubic meters per hour by redirecting some gas from Beineu pipeline. Besides, the city is channeling another 88 thousand cubic meters of gas per hour from a gas storage in Saryagash region. However, the gas pressure is still below the required level in large residential microdistricts of Shymkent city - Kaitpas 1, Kaitpas 2 and Samal. To prop up the gas pressure for the residents even further, the authorities have redirected the gas supply normally used by Energoortalyk 3 heat and power plant that provides heating and electricity for the city's residential blocks. The gas is now being used by the residents, whereas the plant remains operable and is running on reserve fuel. The authorities have assured that the plant has enough reserve fuel and no interruptions in the heating and power supplies should be anticipated.
