Tengrinews.kz - A record number of migrants were rescued off the coast of Gran Canaria Island in the Atlantic Ocean. The Spanish Coast Guard brought ashore 231 people who were aboard a wooden boat, according to Euronews.
According to the Red Cross, this vessel had the highest number of migrants disembarking on the island since record-keeping began.
Among the rescued were 58 minors and 13 women, who claimed to have left The Gambia eleven days ago. Two of them were taken to medical facilities with minor injuries.
Passengers of the vessel claim to be from West African countries—Senegal, Mali, and Guinea—as well as from The Gambia itself. They were rescued in open water just five and a half kilometers from the island.
According to the Ministry of the Interior of Spain, over 42,000 people illegally crossed Spain's borders from January to September, which is 16,000 more than in the same period of 2023.
The logistical resources of some islands receiving migrants, such as El Hierro, which is geographically and demographically smaller than Gran Canaria, reached their limits this summer, sparking intense debate in Spanish politics.
Last month, a boat carrying refugees capsized off the coast of the Canary Islands. At least ten people died.
