Gray pitch-dark smoke has been enveloping Pavlodar for three days. The smell of burning now accompanies the smog over the city. “This is smoke. It is related to wildfires in Russia, in Novosibirsk oblast in particular. Because of the bad weather conditions like low wind and anticyclone, we have passed a storm warning to major industrial companies of the oblast so that they decrease their emissions,” Irina Anokhina said. “We have taken all the measurements. The data is being processed right now. The results will be unveiled later,” she added. Meanwhile, the lack of wind and hot weather make the situation in the city even more complicated. According to the forecasts, short rains will come to the oblast in the nearest 5 days. They will be accompanied by the wind of 9-14 meters per second. Pavlodar oblast Emergency Situations Department has called the citizens to stay home. “We are asking the citizens of Pavlodar city and Pavlodar oblast to abstain from going outside because of the smog related to intensive wildfires in some of the regions of Russia. Please use masks when going outside,” head of prevention division of the oblast Emergency Situations Department Igor Yermolayev said. He added that people with heart and respiratory diseases had to be most careful in this situation. According to the weather service, the weather remains unfavorable in the oblast with low atmospheric pressure and low wind. “All this creates conditions for accumulation of the smoke from Russian wildfires over our region,” the meteorologist said.
