A fire has engulfed the roof of Peter and Paul Church in Almaty, Tengrinews reports from the scene.
The Orthodox church is located at the intersection of Al-Farabi Avenue and Rozybakiyev Street. The area on fire, which started on the roof of the church at around 10:30am, peaked at 200 square meters.
According to a senior assistant chief of the fire extinguishing brigade of the Emergency Situations Department of Almaty Alexander Chistyakov, 18 pieces of equipment, 14 basic and 4 special, and 70 people were involved in the hour-long operation. 15 people were evacuated from the building. No one was injured.
The church built in 1998 has been on reconstruction lately. The works were funded from donations.
The fire would have engulfed the entire roof and then could have spread to the nearby buildings, had it not been taken under control by the firefighting crew. None of the adjacent buildings were damaged.
“This is a huge shock for all of us,” said the wandsman of the Church, Father Maxim.
