Communication systems damaged by the storm have been restored in Zhanatas town of Zhambyl oblast in the south of Kazakhstan, Tengrinews.kz reports citing the press-service of Kazakhstan Ministry of Transport and Communications. The communications were damaged by the storm and severe wind on January 12. "The main network has been restored in Zhanatas, local and international lines are operational, as well as cellular communication," the message states. The restoration works started in the town on January 13 after the strong wind calmed down to the levels safe for works on heights. Local communications in Karatau were restored on January 13 with the use of an independent power supply. Base stations of the cellular operators were switched on via a temporary scheme. "The repair and restoration works in Karatau and Zhanatas will be continued and, according to the cellular operators, will last until the end of the month because of the serious damaged caused by the natural disaster," the Ministry said. The communications were lost in Karatau, Zhanatas and neighboring villages on January 12 after the strong wind with the speed of up to 30 meters per second that damaged cable constructions, antennas and base stations.
