One of Almaty’s largest shopping malls Adem has been destroyed in fire, Tengrinews reports.

The fire started in the evening on April 27. At 10:24 p.m. the Department of Emergency Situations received a call from the security officers of the shopping mall. The first firefighter brigades arrived 6 minutes later. Owners of the boutiques who arrived to Adem earlier could not fight back the tears as they watched the fire engulf the shopping mall and destroy their goods.

The firefighters said that the shopping mall was build of highly combustible construction materials. Gas tanks stored in the shopping mall started exploding. As a result, the temperature in the building went to 270 degrees Centigrade and a heavy toxic smoke filled the shopping mall. Moreover, it turned out that the automatic fire alarm and fire extinguishing systems were out of serves. And the outdoor fire-fighting water system did not have any water in it.

The wind went up fanning the flame . According to KazHydroMet, Kazakhstan's weather forecast company, the wind speed in the shopping mall area reached 2.7 meters per second.

The fire was taken under control only at 6:35 a.m.. Over 500 firefighters and military men with 25 fire fighting vehicles and 16 specialized emergency vehicles fought the fire in the shopping mall.

According to the press office of the Department of Emergency Situations, in 2012 the administration of Adem shopping mall was fined for 11 fire safety violations. In 2013, the violations were eliminated. But in 2014, with the moratorium on inspections of small and medium size business in effect, Adem shopping mall did not undergo any fire security inspection. The next inspection was scheduled for the second half of 2015.

The police started a preliminary investigation on two counts: fire safety violation and careless destruction or damage of another’s property. The Departmnet of the Interior Affairs scheduled a number of inspections at Adem shopping mall.
