Tengrinews.kz – Residents of Almaty received notifications about an earthquake today, but some believed it was a false alarm. The Department of Emergency Situations (DCHS) clarified the situation.
According to the agency, seismic sensors recorded a seismic event in Kyrgyzstan, which did not pose any threat to the population or infrastructure.
“The notification was generated automatically. It was sent correctly and is not an error — this is part of the system’s operation in a test-combat mode,” the DCHS explained.
Officials added that integration continues between the National Center for Seismological Observations and Research and the MassAlert public warning system.
“Experts are studying the stations and sensors to fine-tune parameters and algorithms so that future notifications will be as accurate and clear as possible for the public,” the department stated.
Earlier, Kazakhstani users on Threads shared screenshots showing earthquake alerts on their phones, while others expressed concern that people might ignore such notifications during a real quake.
According to official data, seismic stations detected the tremors on October 23 at 12:20 (Astana time). The epicenter was located 136 kilometers southwest of Almaty, on the territory of Kyrgyzstan.
