No excessive radiation at craft wrecks near Baikonur

Kazakhstan experts have checked the spacecraft wreckage near Baikonur Cosmodrome for excessive radiation background and found none, Tengrinews reports citing the press-service of the Emergency Situations Department of Kyzylorda Oblast. The fragments resembling a wrecks of a spacecraft were found three kilometers from Kokzhabaky village in Kyzylorda Oblast in southern Kazakhstan. The site was cordoned and a team of the Emergency Situations Department was dispatched. The Akim (Governor) of Kyzylorda Oblast formed a commission to work on the case. It includes representatives of the oblast authorities, police, sanitary and epidemiological service and ecologists. The experts have already taken air, soil and water samples. The result will be available in three days. The regional sanitary and epidemiological service has concluded that the radiation background is normal and there are no excessive gamma rays at the site where the fragments, supposedly a spacecraft wreckage, were found. The wrecks will be taken to a regional center for further tests. There is a version that the fragments belong to the Dnepr rocket launched in 2006 from Baikonur Cosmodrome. It crashed shortly after take off scattering its fragments dozens and hundreds of kilometers around the launch pad.
