35 villages in Akmola Oblast are threatened by flood water, Tengrinews reports.

The Committee of Emergency Situations reported on the flood situation in Kazakhstan on April 17  in Astana.

“As of today, at least 15 villages face the danger of flooding along the banks of the Nura and Irtysh rivers, starting from Karaganda Oblast up to Tengriz lake in Korgaldzhinsk Natural Reservation. The villages are: Nura, Aganas, Koschy, Taitobe, Shnet, Kenbidaiyk, Uyaly, Urkendey,” the Head of the Emergency Situation Response Department Aleksey Sovetov said during the press conference.

The Committee of Emergency Situations warned of a possible flooding in 35 villages in Akmola Oblast.

Citing the KazSelZhashita, the main state-run constructor of mudflow prevention structures in Kazakhstan, Sovetov said that spring flooding and possibly an increase of the water level were expected in some of the rivers in Akmola Oblast. “The water level is increasing in the Nura river. There is a possibility of overflowing and flooding,” Sovetov added. Moreover, similar situation is expected on the Irtysh river as a result of rapid snowmelt in the eastern part of the country.

Rescue operations continued in Mustafin’s village, Karaganda Oblast during weekends. 706 houses remained flooded. 10 houses were destroyed in the flood. The emergency services continued inspecting the buildings in the village.

“The rise of water level in the Nura river threatens seven villages situated in Nurinsk district. Evacuations of villagers and blasting works have been completed on the Kundyzdy and Nura rivers. Due to the danger of flooding, villagers from Karasu village, Aktorgay district have been evacuated,” Sovetov said.

The committee has not calculated the damage caused by the flood yet. According to the official information issued by the committee, Bukhar-Zhyrau district of Karagande Oblast suffered the most from the flood.

From March 23 to 29, heaving flooding was registered in four regions of Karaganda Oblast. According to the Emergency Situations Committee, 50 villages with 1149 houses in 17 districts of Akmola, Karaganda, Pavlodar and North Kazakhstan Oblasts were in the flood zone with no electricity at around the same time.

In the end of last week President Nursultan Nazarbayev announced that Karaganda Oblast received $5.3 from the central budget and the officials had regained control over the situation.
