About 1000 cubic meters of melt waters unexpectedly flooded hundreds of houses in Zhanakorgan region of Kyzylorda Oblast in southern Kazakhstan. A lot of houses were standing window sill deep in water, Tengrinews reports citing Channel 7. The water level reached half a meter deep in places, and according to weather forecasts, the water is likely to keep rising flooding inhabited areas. Local residents forgot about their jobs and schools, got their shovels out and are filling bags with sand trying to construct dams to protect their property from the water. However the sandbag barriers have so far been a poor protection from the environment. "I can't get into my house for the second day in row!" a local resident says in dismay. Some of the areas gave been cut off form power and telephone communication because of the floods. There is a shortage of drinking-water and food in the region. "Akim (Governor) has not visited the disaster site. We are on our own. We can't call anybody, because the telephone lines are damaged. The officials don't care about our problems. They are just sitting in their chairs and getting money," local resident Amageldy Tursynbayev complains. Another local resident Amanzhol Nalibayev said, "We went to the Akimat (Town Hall), but they told us that they were not the government and couldn't solve such issues. But they should have at least brought us the sand, then we would have done all the rest ourselves. And now we don't have any assistant at all." At last the officials arrived to the disaster site, but only after the media appeared there. When one of the local residents complained that it is impossible to drive under the bridge because of the amount of water, Deputy Akim of Zhanakorgan region Karzhybek Burkitbayev replied aggressively: "Listen! Don’t talk to me like that! We all live here. If you have a problem, go fix it yourself." Later the Deputy Akim said that the authorities would assist the flood victims. "The houses have not collapsed yet. We are taking all the necessary measures, we have released warnings for all the local residents. 13 million tenge have been already allocated to fight the floods. We have not received any aid from the regional center of Kyzylorda Oblast so far," Burkitbayev said. Channel 7 video Tengrinews TV video of the previous flood
