The news was announced on Wednesday, July 1, by the Telegram channel of the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Russian Academy of Sciences' Space Research Institute (IKI RAS).
"Here comes the first X-class flare," the post read.
A day earlier, scientists had warned of a sharp increase in solar activity. According to their observations, a flare-producing magnetic spiral had begun developing rapidly on the Sun. Over the past 24 hours, 17 solar flares were recorded, compared with 8 the previous day and 5 the day before that. Specialists noted that the most powerful class of solar eruptions could occur at any moment.
Images from space showed that two groups of sunspots, which appeared to be separate formations on the Sun's surface, had connected at the level of the solar corona, forming a single complex magnetic structure that was actively exchanging energy through magnetic field lines.
"On the one hand, this somewhat eases the situation because it allows excess energy to be transferred to a neighboring region. On the other hand, such a conglomerate is essentially one enormous energy reservoir capable of accumulating enough energy for an exceptionally powerful eruption," the scientists explained.
According to the researchers, mathematical modeling is largely ineffective for such complex structures because most of their magnetic system is hidden beneath the Sun's surface. In their assessment, the situation could develop in virtually any direction.
