Two bombs struck near the finish line of the Boston Marathon near Copley Square on Monday, turning a celebration into a bloody scene of destruction.

According to the officials, the blasts were about 50 to 100 yards and 20 seconds apart on a stretch of the marathon course lined with spectators cheering runners through the final yards of over 26-mile marathon just before 3 p.m. A third, undetonated device was found near the finish line.

The police reported three dead and at least 130 injured in Boston Marathon explosions. NBC News reports that the number of injured stands at 113, at least.

Hospitals reported that at least 144 people are being treated, with at least 17 of them in critical condition and 25 in serious condition. At least eight of the patients are children, CNN reports.

At least 10 people injured had limbs amputated, according to a terrorism expert briefed on the investigation.

Boston police later confirmed the third “incident” at John F. Kennedy presidential library, more than an hour after the blasts. But police said that it appeared to be caused by a fire.

The FBI took control of the investigation through its multiagency Joint Terrorism Task Force.

Federal authorities are classifying the bombings as a terrorist attack, but it's not clear whether the origin was domestic or foreign, a federal law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation said.

A federal law enforcement official told CNN that both bombs were small, and initial tests showed no C-4 or other high-grade explosive material, suggesting that the packages used in the attack were crude explosive devices.

Obama vows to hold culprits of Boston blasts accountable. “We don't know who did this or why”, he says.

Obama says US will upgrade security after Boston blasts “as necessary”. The New York police have already stepped up security after the explosions.

“The American people will say a prayer for Boston tonight,” he said. “And Michelle and I send our deepest thoughts and prayers to the families of the victims in the wake of this senseless loss.”

"We still do not know who did this or why. And people shouldn’t jump to conclusions before we have all the facts. But make no mistake -- we will get to the bottom of this. And we will find out who did this; we'll find out why they did this. Any responsible individuals, any responsible groups will feel the full weight of justice.

Today is a holiday in Massachusetts -- Patriots’ Day. It’s a day that celebrates the free and fiercely independent spirit that this great American city of Boston has reflected from the earliest days of our nation. And it’s a day that draws the world to Boston’s streets in a spirit of friendly competition. Boston is a tough and resilient town. So are its people. I'm supremely confident that Bostonians will pull together, take care of each other, and move forward as one proud city. And as they do, the American people will be with them every single step of the way.

You should anticipate that as we get more information, our teams will provide you briefings. We're still in the investigation stage at this point. But I just want to reiterate we will find out who did this and we will hold them accountable."
