Tengrinews.kz – Reconstruction of one of the largest international border checkpoints is set to begin in the West Kazakhstan region, according to Moi Gorod.
Starting July 10, the "Syrym" checkpoint on the border with Russia will be closed to passenger vehicles. Freight traffic will remain unaffected.
According to Mirlan Nasipov, acting director of the West Kazakhstan branch of KazAvtoZhol JSC, the project has been allocated 22 billion tenge, with 9.9 billion of that to be used this year.
A contractor has already been selected, and preparatory work is underway — including the relocation of passport control booths, temporary utilities, and fencing.
Planned infrastructure:
- A three-story administrative building;
- Two inspection complexes;
- Expansion to 12 traffic lanes;
- Two dedicated lanes for trucks and oversized vehicles;
- A parking area for buses.
Nasipov noted that the original plan was to fully close "Syrym" during reconstruction and complete the work in 16 months. However, it has now been decided to keep it partially operational in order to maintain border crossing capacity.
Traffic Management:
- Freight transport will face no restrictions;
- Passenger cars will be redirected to other checkpoints: "Taskala", "Shagan", and "Aksai".
