Tengrinews.kz — A decommissioned bridge on the highway along the Great Almaty Canal has been washed away in the Almaty region.

According to the regional akimat, the bridge over the Turgen River at the 54th kilometer of the KV-49 highway was declared unsafe back in 2024.

As a result, traffic on the bridge was restricted.

"On July 1, 2026, heavy rainfall caused the water level in the Turgen River to rise, leading to soil erosion around the structural foundation of this unsafe bridge," the akimat stated.

When the bridge will be repaired

The akimat responded that a project to replace the damaged bridge has already been prepared, state expertise approval has been received, and funding has been allocated.

A contractor has been selected following a public procurement process and is scheduled to begin work later this month.

The Almaty Region Department of Emergency Situations commented on the situation.

"Following heavy rainfall in the mountainous areas, there was a sharp rise in the water level of the Kaskelen River. The strong current damaged a bridge on the access road to the Iskra gardening community, located approximately three kilometers from the eco-post," the DES reported.
