Tengrinews.kz - Photos of the first resort town Wonsan-Kalma in North Korea have appeared online.

According to Yonhap News, North Korea has completed the multi-year construction of a large-scale tourist project - the resort town of Wonsan-Kalma in Gangwon Province. The official opening of this facility is scheduled for June next year. The country's leader Kim Jong-un personally visited the new tourist center.

Work on the project began back in 2014 but faced many difficulties, including international sanctions and the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to repeated delays. Initially, the completion of construction was planned for 2019, but it was only in 2024, after the pace of work was intensified, that the project was completed. The resort complex is located on the picturesque coastal strip of the Wonsan-Kalma Peninsula, including the famous Mensa Sipni beach area with snow-white sand.

Kim Jong-un called the new resort a "spectacular work of art" and noted that the city meets the high standards required to host both international events and political and cultural events. He stressed that the development of tourism is an important step in strengthening socialist culture and a significant element in the country's economic strategy.

"The development of tourism will create a new page in the construction of socialist culture," the country's leader noted.

North Korea is betting on tourism as one of the few legal ways to attract foreign currency. The resort is expected to become popular with tourists from Russia, especially ahead of the summer season.

In the long term, authorities plan to link the Wonsan-Kalma resort with the tourist area in Kumgangsan, as well as actively develop other tourist destinations, including mountain tourism in the Samjiyon area.

North Korea hopes that the opening of Wonsan-Kalma will be an important step in developing tourism and will contribute to the improvement of the country's economic situation.
