Tengrinews.kz - TikTok returned online after Donald Trump promised to restore it. The platform's downtime lasted only a few hours, but no one can guarantee the platform's future in the United States, according to CNN.
The restoration of TikTok will be good news for 170 million American users of the app, many of whom use it for several hours every day to find news, entertainment, and communication, and in some cases, to earn a living after weeks of uncertainty.
This has signaled that Trump may achieve a significant political victory by taking responsibility for bringing the popular platform back.
Approximately 12 hours after the first shutdown of the service, U.S. users regained access to TikTok via web browsers and the app, although a warning about the shutdown still appears on the page.
However, while TikTok's shutdown lasted only a few hours, ensuring the app's long-term future in the United States is likely to be more difficult.
On Sunday, Trump stated in a post on Truth Social that he plans to issue an executive order after his inauguration to "extend the period of time before the law’s prohibitions take effect."
However, the executive order may face challenges, including from members of Trump's party who claim they are opposed to any extension of the ban.
The brief shutdown of the app marked the realization of years of efforts to block U.S. access to TikTok due to national security concerns related to its Chinese owner, ByteDance. Outgoing President Joe Biden signed a law in April of last year, giving ByteDance 270 days to sell TikTok to a U.S. owner or one of its allies, otherwise, a ban would be imposed.
Therefore, even if Trump promises to lift the ban, he cannot simply undo the law passed by Congress and signed by the president through an executive order.
Earlier, media outlets reported on the possible sale of TikTok by China to the owner of social network X, SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Details are available in the full article.
