Tengrinews.kz - Tourists shared stories about the strangest places they have visited.

Recently on Reddit there was a lively discussion among users who shared their stories about the most unusual places they have visited. The discussion's author clarified that "strange" is meant in the broadest sense and that no offense is intended.

"This could mean a place with a weird vibe (not necessarily bad), or a place that clashes with the rest of the country or region. It could even be a place that just "looks" weird," he noted.

The author cited the city of Swakopmund in Namibia as an example, describing it as a "bit of Germany was just transported in Africa." According to him, the city features German architecture, beer halls, German cuisine restaurants, and even streets with German names. At the same time, the city is surrounded by desert and ocean, and the palm-lined streets appear empty.

Users eagerly engaged with the topic and shared their impressions. One of them talked about Haw Par Villa, an amusement park in Singapore.

"It’s an aged theme park opened by the original founder of Tiger Balm dedicated to passing down traditional Chinese values, tales, and folklore. In reality it’s filled with thousands of strange statues and scenes depicting people suffering in hell, decapitation, torture scenes, animals killing each other, a statue of a woman breastfeeding her mother in law. Just some campy whack shit! Google Images will show you some of these if you look it up. So strange…I freaking loved it," the commenter wrote.

Another user mentioned the city of Americana in Sao Paulo, Brazil, which was founded by Confederates who fled the US after the Civil War. He noted that the city hosts an annual festival with pre-war era costumes, which feels like an episode from a Twilight Zone.

Particular attention was drawn to the description of Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, as the " cleanest, fanciest city ever." The city is built from Italian white marble and gold, people are rarely seen on the streets, and it is surrounded by extravagant monuments and golden statues of the former president.

"Turkmenbashi is their tourist resort town by the Caspian sea, but they're not used to having tourists at all. Just empty hotels everywhere and not much to do. My group were the only guests at our hotel. The last evening we asked about breakfast time, and was told it was at 9. We were leaving at 9, and they knew that. We asked it they could serve breakfast at 8. They had to discuss it, and finally went along with our wishes," a user shared.

Additionally, participants in the discussion recounted visits to unusual places such as cave hotels in Cappadocia, Turda Salt Mine, the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum in Poland, the Sedlec Ossuary in the Czech Republic, Copenhagen's Freetown Christiania, Naples is a city of contrasts and many more.
