According to the Independent, the Air India Express plane took off from Madurai Airport at around 1:54 PM local time and was scheduled to land in Singapore at about 8:50 PM. However, the landing was delayed by more than an hour due to threats regarding a potential explosion on the aircraft.
"Singapore police received a bomb threat at around 8:25 PM local time, about three hours after the flight's departure. To ensure a safe landing, the aircraft was escorted by two fighter jets. Our Ground Based Air Defence system and Explosive Ordnance Disposal team were also activated. Once on the ground, the plane was handed to the Airport Police," Singapore’s defence minister Ng Eng Hen said.
It was reported that after a safe landing and a thorough search of the plane, no dangerous items were found.
Indian media noted that from October 14 to 15, false bomb threats were received via email and social media for 10 flights.
One of them, an Air India flight from Delhi to Chicago, was forced to make an emergency landing at a remote Canadian airport.
Another flight with 211 passengers on board was diverted to Iqaluit Airport and underwent security checks before continuing to Chicago on Tuesday, October 15.
The previous day, an Air India flight from Mumbai to New York carrying 239 passengers made an emergency landing in Delhi after receiving a bomb threat.
