Russian woman tried to smuggle a lemur into Kazakhstan

Tengrinews.kz - Samara Customs officers, in cooperation with border guards from the Orenburg region, stopped a woman at a vehicle checkpoint who was transporting a cat lemur in her car. The Russian woman was heading to Kazakhstan, according to the Federal Customs Service of Russia (FCS).

Tengrinews.kz - Samara Customs officers, in cooperation with border guards from the Orenburg region, stopped a woman at a vehicle checkpoint who was transporting a cat lemur in her car. The Russian woman was heading to Kazakhstan, according to the Federal Customs Service of Russia (FCS).

The woman explained to the border guards that she was taking the lemur named Georgette to Kazakhstan to increase the population of this species. However, she did not have the necessary permits and documents for the animal.

It was reported that the cat lemur is listed under CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) as an endangered species, and special authorization is required for its export.

An administrative offense case has been initiated against the Russian woman. Authorities are currently deciding whether to place the lemur in a specialized facility for temporary care.
