The incident occurred at the factory in the cillage of Kavakli at 08.25 AM local time on December 24. Residents of the village reported that they felt tremors caused by a powerful explosion.

Footage from the scene has appeared online. It shows a fireball escaping from the factory, and then pieces of the destroyed building flying around the area.

Numerous fire crews and medics were sent to eliminate the consequences of the explosion. It is assumed that people may have been left under the rubble of the factory building.
Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc said an investigation had been launched into the blast.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said the cause had not yet been determined, but authorities had ruled out the possibility of a terrorist attack.
