Plane explodes on beach in Brazil

Tengrinews.kz - A plane exploded on Cruzeiro Beach in Ubatuba, Sao Paulo state in Brazil, killing one person and injuring seven, according to Metropoles.

The incident occurred on the morning of January 9, when the plane skidded off the runway of a local airport and headed towards the sea. Once on the beach, it exploded. At that moment, five people were on the plane (three adults and two children) and three people who were passing by at a skate park on the beach.

Videos that were published on social networks show people running towards the scene of the explosion. Thick smoke and destroyed wreckage of the plane are visible.

As a result of the accident, the pilot Paulo Seghetto died, four passengers were injured and taken to the Santa Casa hospital. Their condition is assessed as stable. Three people who were at the skate park near the scene of the incident were also injured.

Ubatuba City Hall initially reported two deaths, but later clarified that only one death had been confirmed.

The aircraft, registered PR-GFS, took off from Mineiros Airport in Goias state. It was intended for corporate or private use and had a maximum range of 2871 kilometers.

It is explained that when attempting to land at Ubatuba, the pilot encountered adverse weather conditions: it was raining and the runway was wet.

The police, firefighters, civil protection services and the municipal guard were at the scene. The causes of the accident will be investigated by the Aeronautical Accidents Investigation and Prevention Center (Cenipa), part of the Brazilian Air Force.

Pilot Paulo Seghetto, a native of Goiania, worked for Voepass Linhas Aereas and had experience flying various aircraft. He was trapped in the cockpit, was pulled out by rescuers, but died from his injuries.

Among the passengers were members of the family of agricultural entrepreneur Nelvo Friz, including his wife and two children. All of them received medical care and are under the supervision of doctors.

The investigation into the causes of the crash is ongoing.

Earlier, on December 25, 2024, a tragic air crash involving an Embraer aircraft of the Azerbaijani airline Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) occurred three kilometers from Aktau Airport. The plane, flying from Baku to Grozny, crashed while attempting an emergency landing. There were 62 passengers and 5 crew members on board.
