According to The Guardian, the wildfires raging around Los Angeles since January 7 have killed at least five people, destroyed almost 2000 homes and buildings, and forced more than 130 000 people to evacuate.

Earlier, Los Angeles and its surrounding areas were engulfed in major fires. The Los Angeles-adjacent city of Pacific Palisades, a town of 23 000 people located about 20 miles west of the city center, burned to the ground. More than 1000 homes were destroyed, and most residents fled the city.
