If you're already dreaming about traveling in 2025, check this out before you book your tickets. The authoritative guidebook Fodor's Travel has published its annual Go and No Lists, where it identifies places that are best avoided and suggests alternative destinations that can provide unforgettable experiences.
Why did these places make it onto the No List?
Experts explained that many popular tourist destinations suffer from an excessive influx of travelers. This leads to environmental problems, overloaded infrastructure, and a deterioration in the quality of life of local residents. In 2025, the No List includes both nature routes and famous cities.
No List
- Scotland North Coast 500: a picturesque route has become a victim of its own popularity. Tourists leave behind trash, fire marks, and even human waste, causing discontent among locals and harming the environment.
- Bali, Indonesia: Unreasonable infrastructure development is destroying the island’s natural ecosystems. The plastic problem has reached apocalyptic proportions, threatening Bali’s unique nature.
- Popular European cities: Residents of Barcelona, Mallorca, Venice, the Canary Islands and Lisbon are tired of crowds of tourists who are driving up housing prices, overloading resources and changing the appearance of cities.
- Koh Samui, Thailand: Tourists are polluting the island, creating 200 000 tons of waste that is hidden from view. A new surge in visits is expected after the premiere of the TV series “The White Lotus.”
- Mount Everest: Overcrowding with tourists is negatively affecting the sacred mountain, local communities and the impressions of travelers themselves.
Other “problem areas:"
- Agrigento, Sicily – water crisis.
- British Virgin Islands – infrastructure problems.
- Kerala, India – frequent natural disasters.
- Oaxaca City, Mexico – cultural commercialism.
- Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan – overcrowded with tourists, rising prices.
