Tengrinews.kz – Tourists in Spain are being warned about a new type of scam: street hugs, which result in tourists being deprived of money, gadgets and other valuables, according to Birmingham Hall.
This type of fraud appeared in Madrid. Local police officers confiscated more than 40 thousand euros, 11 watches and several pieces of jewelry from "tourist-friendly" compatriots.
The scam is usually carried out by a duo - a man and a woman. The latter addresses the tourist: "Amigo, let's hug", distracting his attention, while the man takes his phone, money and other things out of his pockets. The nervousness of the tourists from having to hug a stranger plays a role.
Police are concerned not only about tourists' personal belongings, but also about their safety amid growing negative sentiments among locals towards holidaymakers.
Aside from the "hug scam", there's also the notorious “bird poo scam” on the Costa del Sol, where pickpockets splatter what seems to be bird poop on individuals to rob them.
Previously, Kazakhstan’s Agency for Regulation and Development of the Financial Market announced a new fraudulent term “dropper."
