Tengrinews.kz – At least 42 people were killed and 49 others injured in a bus crash in a mountainous area of South Africa, CNN reports.
The bus veered off the road and plunged down a steep embankment on a mountain pass in northern South Africa. The accident occurred around 6:00 p.m. local time on Sunday near the town of Louis Trichardt, about 400 kilometers north of the capital, Pretoria.
According to the Ministry of Transport, the victims include seven children, 17 men, and 18 women. Six people sustained critical injuries, and 31 others were seriously hurt and taken to several hospitals. One child in critical condition was airlifted to a hospital.
The Limpopo provincial government said rescue operations continued late into Sunday evening.
Authorities stated that the bus was traveling to Zimbabwe and was carrying citizens of Zimbabwe and Malawi who were returning home. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
In a statement, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his “his deep condolences to the nations of Zimbabwe and Malawi who have lost compatriots.”
Last year, in the same province of Limpopo, another bus accident claimed 45 lives when the vehicle fell from a bridge into a ravine. The only survivor of that crash was an eight-year-old girl. Most of the passengers were Botswana nationals heading to South Africa for an Easter service, the report added.
