Tengrinews.kz - U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has proposed that Canada and Mexico become part of the United States if they wish to continue receiving American subsidies. He made this statement during a program on NBC News.
Trump threatened to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico unless these countries take steps to reduce the flow of migrants and drugs into the U.S.
"We're subsidizing Canada to the tune of over $100 billion a year. We're subsidizing Mexico for almost $300 billion. We shouldn't be - why are we subsidizing these countries? If we're going to subsidize them, let them become a state," Trump said, as quoted by Newsweek.
Earlier in December, Trump reportedly told Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that he plans to impose 25% import tariffs on all goods from Canada unless Ottawa takes decisive action to curb illegal migration across the border and reduce the trade deficit, which Trump claims stands at around $100 billion.
In response, Trudeau warned the incoming U.S. leader that such measures could devastate Canada’s economy. Trump then, seemingly in jest, suggested that Canada could become the 51st state, with Trudeau as its governor. According to Fox News, Trudeau reacted with “nervous laughter.”
At the end of November, Trump also posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, that he intends to impose 25% tariffs on all goods imported from Mexico and Canada on the first day of his presidency. This, he said, is a measure to combat illegal migration and drug trafficking.
