Former four-division champion Roy Jones Jr will visit Gennady Golovkin’s hometown in Kazakhstan as a guest at the 21st Galym Zharylgapov’s Boxing Tournament, Tengrinews reports citing Vesti.kz.
The amateur boxing tournament takes place in Karaganda, Kazakhstan from December 16 to 21. Jones was invited as a guest and agreed to visit Kazakhstan.
The tournament gathers boxers from 13 countries. As a silver medalist of the Athens Olympics Gennady Golovkin himself won the tournament five times.
Golovkin’s last fight took place in Carson, California on October 19. The Kazakhstani boxer defeated Marco Antonio Rubio in the second round with a KO. GGG defended his WBA and IBO titles as well as won the WBC Interim title.
Jones who was at the fight as HBO’s expert analyst expressed his doubts about the Golovkin-Rubio fight.
“I don’t know about Rubio. I thought he came out to fight. He was doing pretty good, then he got hit with a good shot on the top of the head and went down. On the canvas he looked as though he was conscious of what was going on but he didn’t get up. (…) I’m not suggesting that he didn’t really try, but I can’t really tell. I didn’t like what I saw,” Jones told BoxingScene.com.
