Tengrinews.kz - Italian runner Valentina Petrillo will take part in the Paris Paralympic Games. She will be the first transgender athlete in the history of the competition.

The 50-year-old Italian, who changed gender in 2019, was a bronze medallist in the 200 and 400 meters at last year's World Championships in Paris.

"Despite the controversies in boxing at the Paris Olympics involving Iman Helif and Lin Yu-Ting, who won gold medals, the 2024 Paralympic Games will go down in history as the first where a transgender athlete competes," reports Marca.

The publication notes that, unlike Petrillo, the boxers have genetic differences and have never had a sex change, while the Italian athlete identifies as a woman who transitioned 5 years ago.

Before changing gender, Valentina had already won 11 national titles in the men's category.
