American trainer Angel Garcia questioned Gennady Golovkin’s popularity, Tengrinews reports citing Vesti.kz.
“This guy can’t even speak English. What’s his name? Yeah, he can’t even speak English. (…) They are telling he’ll be the next superstar. Do you believe this shit?” Garcia asked back in 2013.
Garcia, WBC and WBA light welterweight champion Danny Garcia’s father and trainer said that Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) would lose to a 50 y.o. Berdard Hopkins (55-6-2, 32 KOs). In this case, Hopkins would have to go down to 160 to fight against Golovkin.
IBF and WBA champion Hopkins earlier won a fight against another Kazakhstani Beibut Shumenov on April 20.
Garcia added that Miguel Cotto should agree to fight against Gennady Golovkin in a unification fight. “Honestly, Cotto should do it. But Cotto got to be smart. He cannot go slow. He got to box,” Garcia began. He added that Cotto should not try to KO Golovkin.
He "ain’t no racists", Garcia said. But, putting it lightly (too lightly maybe) he is definitely not supportive of any foreign boxers debuting in the USA.
Meanwhile, undefeated Golovkin won Australia’s former world champion Daniel Geale at the Madison Square Garden by a TKO in the 3rd round.
WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto will return to the MSG on December 13 after his last fight against Sergio Marinez. His opponent is yet unknown.
