The 2nd Kazakhstan Wheelchair Dancing Championship among disabled athletes is being held in Kostanay, Tengrinews.kz reports, citing Galina Vanina, Vice-President of Paralympic Committee of Kazakhstan. “The dancers arrived to Kostanay on June 20. The competitions are taking place on June 21-24. We are doing a great and productive work now. Three dancing couples have represented Kazakhstan in the World Wheelchair Dancing Championship that was held in the Netherlands. They are 2011 Kazakhstan Championship prize-winners. They have participated in the World Championship this year and were ranked 15th, 17th and 19th out of 40 other dancing couples from all over the world. They are Yerdildinova Dina and Abdrakhmanov Ondassyn, Abuov Kurbangali and Aliya Tussupbekova (both couples from Astana), and Fakiya Ashikova and Amangissov Serzh from Taraz,” Vanina said. According to her, there is a big problem in getting the special wheelchairs required for this kind of sport in Kazakhstan. “There is a requirement for standard wheelchairs, but we have a big shortcoming there. We are going to change the situation for the better jointly with Nur Otan party and the Confederation of Disabled Persons,” she added. The 2nd Annual Kazakhstan Wheelchair Dancing Championship among disabled athletes with musculoskeletal disorders is being held in Kostanay as part of Boundless Opportunities national campaign supported by Kazakhstan Sport and Physical Education Agency and Kostanay Oblast Ballroom Dances Federation. 12 dancing couples are participating in the Championship this year. “As you know, wheelchair dancing has been included into the Paralympic Games. So, we are trying to develop this sport here in Kazakhstan, so that our couples can represent Kazakhstan in Rio de Janeiro 2016 Paralympic Games. We’d like our couples to perform decently there. I hope that Kazakhstan Championship will go smoothly here, in Kostanay. We are going to organize this event in Astana city next year,” Vanina said. Wheelchair dancing was officially included into the National Registry of Kazakhstan Paralympic Games in 2010. The main difficulty of this kind of sport is that dancers perform complicated tweaks with their wheelchairs and demonstrates artistry and grace at the same time. By Aidana Usupova
