Tengrinews.kz - Kazakhstan's Ministry of Transport has published a report with preliminary findings from the investigation into the Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) plane crash that occurred on December 25, 2024, near Aktau.

The report includes photos showing the damage to the aircraft, which was destroyed and partially burned. One of the images presents a reconstruction of the aircraft’s flight after the emergency situation began.

"At 05:13:56, according to CVR (cockpit voice recorder) data, a repeated sound impact was recorded. At 05:14:58, based on CVR data, the captain contacted the cabin crew via intercom to clarify the situation: 'Hello, what happened?' The flight attendant reported: 'Two seats exploded, I... umm... I can’t approach because the passengers are standing, I’m trying to seat them,'" the report states.

The official report notes that Kazakhstan has ensured full preservation and security of the crash site with the involvement of law enforcement agencies.

"After completing the field phase of the investigation, the commission organized the transportation of the aircraft fragments to a specially designated and secured hangar for further examination," the report states.

The investigation commission continues to conduct a detailed inspection of the aircraft’s structural damage.

"An initial examination of the recovered fragments revealed numerous penetrating and non-penetrating damages of various sizes and shapes in the tail section of the fuselage, fin, stabilizer, elevators, and rudders. Similar damage was found on the aircraft's left engine, left wing, and other components. Some of the damage has a distinct rectangular shape," the report notes.

"Below are photographs and diagrams showing evidence of damage to hydraulic systems 1, 2, and 3 that occurred before the aircraft’s impact with the ground, likely caused by foreign objects penetrating the aircraft components. These damages resulted in the loss of hydraulic fluid/pressure," the preliminary report states.

"Further images show evidence of damage to the electrical wiring controlling the stabilizer trim drive, also likely caused by foreign objects before the aircraft impacted the ground. This damage rendered the first and second pitch trim channels inoperative," the report adds.

Penetrating damage was found in hydraulic system No. 3 and the stabilizer control mechanism.

  • The penetrating damage indicates that foreign objects entered the aircraft’s structure.
  • Most of the damage was concentrated in the fin and stabilizer.

"A visual inspection of the damage revealed both penetrating and non-penetrating impacts. In the presence of authorized representatives from the Federative Republic of Brazil, the Republic of Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan’s law enforcement agencies, the investigation commission retrieved foreign objects from the non-penetrating damaged areas to be sent for additional forensic examination. A large number of foreign objects were extracted from these areas," the report states.

It is noted that the information presented in this report is preliminary and may be revised or supplemented based on further research and analysis of all materials.

"After the investigation is completed, a final report on the results of the aviation incident will be prepared," the Ministry of Transport's press service stated.
