Tengrinews.kz - The Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) has introduced additional tariffs on imports of cast aluminum wheels from Japan, Thailand, Turkey, and Malaysia.

The measure, set to last five years, applies to both new and used wheels with diameters ranging from 13 to 20 inches. Depending on the country of origin, the tariff will range from 9.38% to 42.82%.

The decision follows an anti-dumping investigation launched on March 1, 2023, at the request of the Russian Aluminium Association. The probe found that imports from these countries were harming the economies of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) member states.

"The pricing policy of cast aluminum wheel manufacturers from the dumping countries resulted in our own companies being unable to increase the selling price of goods commensurate with the increase in their production costs in the face of their reduced domestic market share. As a result, their sales became disadvantageous, while the production became negatively profitable," said EEC Minister for Trade Andrey Slepnev.

Volkswagen, meanwhile, reported a 2.3% decline in sales in 2024, delivering just over 9 million vehicles. The drop is attributed to reduced domestic market spending and fierce price competition in China, the company's largest market.

In light of the growing problems with grey imports of cars, authorities in Kazakhstan have decided to consider changes in the regulation of vehicle imports. Read about the new rules here.
