Tengrinews.kz – Russia's Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) has restricted access to Discord due to violations of Russian law, according to RBC (RosBiznesConsulting), the Russian media group.
The agency stated that it had demanded the platform remove prohibited content, but some materials remain accessible. Discord also ignored a court ruling imposing a fine for failing to remove the content.
"Access to Discord has been restricted due to violations of Russian law, which are necessary to prevent the use of the platform for terrorist and extremist purposes, recruitment of citizens, drug sales, and the dissemination of illegal information," Roskomnadzor stated.
Discord is a platform popular among gamers and the corporate IT sector. In addition to text messaging, it offers video and voice chat features. Most users communicate within open or private groups, accessible via invitation links.
The platform became popular among cryptocurrency users, blockchain developers, and crypto traders during the early stages of the market. Almost every existing crypto service, including major exchanges, has its own servers, many of which feature Russian-language sections. While many Russian users have since migrated to Telegram, Discord remains a key platform for global cryptocurrency holders, the report notes.
On Tuesday, RBC reported, citing data from the outage tracking service Downdetector, that there was a technical failure in the operation of the Discord platform.
