Tengrinews.kz – OpenAI has published its largest study yet on how people interact with ChatGPT. The research, based on an analysis of 1.5 million conversations, tracks how usage has evolved since the chatbot’s launch three years ago.
Closing the gender gap
The study shows that ChatGPT has expanded well beyond early adopters, with gender disparities narrowing significantly. By mid-2025, the user base more closely reflected the adult population as a whole.
In January 2024, only 37 percent of users with names classified as female were active on the platform. By July 2025, their share had risen to 52 percent, surpassing male users.
ChatGPT also spread rapidly worldwide, especially in low- and middle-income countries. By May 2025, growth in the lowest-income countries was more than four times faster than in the highest-income nations.
Everyday tasks dominate
Most consumer use of ChatGPT centers on daily tasks. Three-quarters of conversations involve practical advice, information searches, or writing assistance. Writing remains the most common work-related activity, while programming and creative expression remain niche.
Researchers divided user activity into three categories:
Requests (49%) – the largest and fastest-growing segment, with people increasingly treating ChatGPT as an advisor rather than just a task performer.
Actions (40%) – tasks like writing, planning, or coding, with about a third of these used for professional purposes.
Self-expression (11%) – personal reflections, exploration, or playful interaction.
Around 30 percent of usage is work-related, while 70 percent serves personal purposes — both categories continue to grow. This highlights ChatGPT’s dual role as a productivity tool and a source of everyday value.
OpenAI noted it will continue analyzing usage trends as the product evolves and new features are introduced.
In August, the company unveiled GPT-5, the most advanced and fastest version of its AI model to date, which powers ChatGPT.
