Tengrinews.kz – Kazakhstan may get a new investor for the construction of three thermal power plants in the Abai, Akmola, and East Kazakhstan regions. This was announced by First Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar.

“Work is underway on the three TPPs, including design stages. There is a problem with subsidizing the interest rates on equipment, so negotiations continue. However, the design and preparatory work, particularly in Kokshetau, has not stopped. If the Russian investors do not provide funds, the investor may of course change,” Sklyar said in the corridors of Akorda.

According to the deputy prime minister, specifics will be announced in June. He also denied that the situation was related to anti-Russian sanctions.

“No, we must obtain export financing for the equipment that will be part of the project,” he added.

Plans to build the three TPPs were announced in 2023. The selected sites are Kokshetau, Semey, and Ust-Kamenogorsk.

Later, the Ministry of Energy noted that the projects face some difficulties due to the refusal of international financial institutions to participate in coal generation projects.

In January, when journalists asked former Energy Minister Almasadam Satkaliev about the construction timelines, he confirmed that preparatory work for the sites had already begun.
