He recalled the hard years in the beginning of the Independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

At that point in history Kazakhstan was like a piece of broken plate tossed on the ground - it was cut off from everything. "All the economic ties broke off in an instant. All the enterprises stopped, there was no heating, wood was used to boil tea in the yards of multi-storey buildings, can you imagine this happening in my home metallurgical town of Temirtau! Teachers, doctors, servicemen were not paid any salaries, there were no pensions for months on, no jobs. Imagine being the president of this country. Whatever you do the inflation rate keeps spinning at 50 percent a month in 1994. What would you do?" he addressed the journalists.

"I gathered the necessary experts, I was learning on the go and pulled Kazakhstan out of that hole, I think this is my greatest achievement," he said.

Nazarbayev also said that his feelings were different when he first won the presidential election. "You know, when you are first elected president – it is a different thing. The excitement is different, everything is different. But when you have been working for 20 years in this position, it is an entirely different matter," he said.

Responding to questions from the media about whether it was easier to run the country in the beginning or now, Nazarbayev said: "It has become easier, of course. And I am glad it is in the past. We are people too, consisting of the same sensory organs that all the people have."

Nazarbayev stressed that he was continuing to work after the reelection. "Probably, my first act will be to create a commission for the implementation of the five institutional reforms, we will proceed along each of these directions: meritocratic state, the rule of law, Kazakhstani identity, development of industry and economy, open and transparent government. Life does not stop, we are moving forward," he said.

He added that casting their votes for him the Kazakhstanis gave him a go “to continue with what you were doing, preserving the country's peace, stability and improving the lives of the people."
