Nursultan Nazarbayev has sent a telegram of condolences to the Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Hsien Loong in connection with the death of the first Prime Minister of the country Lee Kuan Yew, Tengrinews reports with a reference to the press service of Akorda.
The telegram said that the President of Kazakhstan had learned of the death of Lee Kuan Yew, the founder of modern Singapore, with deep sorrow.
"We met often, I considered him a good friend, I adopted his experience. Sharing the irretrievable loss on behalf of the people of Kazakhstan and on my own behalf I express my condolences to the family and friends, as well as all of the people of Singapore," he said in a telegram.
Nursultan Nazarbayev stressed that Lee Kuan Yew had made great efforts to strengthen the international standing of Singapore, develop it into a leading Asian country, thereby leaving a lasting legacy.
"Kazakhstani people will never forget the great contribution of Lee Kuan Yew into the building of strong and friendly relations between our countries," the letter of condolence said.
Lee Kuan Yew died at the age of 91 after being taken to hospital with severe pneumonia. He is the man behind Singapore’s "economic miracle" that turned a once backward country into the financial center of Southeast Asia.
