Lithuanian PM meets with Nursultan Nazarbayev and Karim Massimov

Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister Karim Massimov has had a meeting with the Prime Minister of Lithuania Algirdas Butkevičius, who came to Kazakhstan for the VIII Astana Economic Forum, Tengrinews reports citing PrimeMinister.kz.

During the meeting held on May 19, the two counterparts discussed cooperation in trade between the two nations as well as the prospects of bilateral cooperation in transport and investment, agriculture, energy and other sectors of the economy.

Karim Massimov acknowledged that Kazakhstan and Lithuania had a huge potential to develop the bilateral ties.

He noted that Kazakhstan could learn from Lithuania’s experience in the support of SMEs, and the Lithuanian companies could participate in Kazakhstan’s projects of industrial development.

"By making investments in the special economic zones of Lithuania, Kazakh companies could produce goods with Made in EU label and subsequently export them further to the EU," Karim Massimov said.

He expressed hope that the visit of the Prime Minister of Lithuania would result in a breakthrough in the development of the bilateral relations.

Algirdas Butkevičius also marked the broad prospects for cooperation. "This visit demonstrates that our country sees great potential for closer cooperation," he said.

Two days later on May 21 Lithuania’s PM met with Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev. During the meeting Nazarbayev thanked Butkevičius for his participation in the Astana forum that was created to address the global financial crisis of 2007-2009.

Nursultan Nazarbayev also marked the high level of political dialogue and economic cooperation between the two countries.

Butkevičius expressed gratitude to the Kazakh leader for his significant contribution into strengthening and development of the bilateral relations. “Kazakhstan is the most important partner of Lithuania in the Central Asian region,” he noted.

He also seized the opportunity to congratulate Nazarbayev on his reelection, expressing his confidence in Kazakhstan’s ability to achieve all its goals.
