Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev congratulated the country on the Victory Day at the flower-laying ceremony at Otan Korgaushylar (Defenders of the Homeland) monument in Astana, Tengrinews reports citing the presidential press service.
"Victory Day is the greatest holiday. Thanks to our fathers and grandfathers, today we are living under a peaceful sky, building a strong state and looking confidently into the future. More than one million eight hundred thousand sons and daughters of our land fought in the battles. Millions worked, giving everything for the front, everything for the victory," the president said.
The veterans are respected not only for their feat of arms but also as an example to follow in life, the President stressed, urging to remember that the Victory Day is a celebration of friendship, courage and brotherhood.
"It is necessary to appreciate, respect and learn from them [the veterans], from their courage, hard work and unity. May they be with us longer, so that we can celebrate together with them the 70th anniversary of the Victory next year," Nazarbayev said.
At the end of his speech, Nazarbayev wished the veterans good health, happiness, and a peaceful sky.
According to the press service, the ceremony was attended by veterans of war and of labor, heads of government agencies, representatives of the diplomatic corps, as well as residents of the capital, who came to remember and give tribute to the Kazakhstanis killed in the Great Patriotic War (WWW II).
With the accompanying sounds of the State Guard brass orchestra the president laid the Garland of Glory to the Eternal Flame. A minute of silence was observed. Then, the squadron of the Honor Guard then passed in a solemn march.
