Kazakhstan is hoping to enter the UN Security Council as a temporary member in 2016, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Kazakhstan Foreign Minister Yerzhan Kazykhanov as saying in Chinese Institute of International Problems. “Kazakhstan is calling for rigorous compliance with rules and regulations of the international law by all the members of the world community. All the actions at the international scene have to be sanctioned by the UN. In this relation I would like to stress that Kazakhstan is calling for inviolacy of the UN’s role as the that of the only international authority eligible to interfere into conflicts. Kazakhstan is planning to support this position in case it is admitted as a temporary member of the UN Security Council in 2016,” Kazykhanov says. Kazakhstan Foreign Minister noted that discussions about reforming the UN had been in place for a long time, “but one thing is clear: fundamental principles of the Organization - that was created in 1945 with the purpose of preventing world wars and guarding peace and as a mediator in conflicts - have to be preserved in their integrity,” he said. However, the Minister continued that Kazakhstan believes that “there is an objective necessity for adaptating the Organization’s tools and procedures to the modern reality of the world and enabling it to more flexibly and effectively react to a broad range of new challenges and threats”. Kazykhanov stressed that Kazakhstan supported the opinion that “a complex, package reform of the UN Security Council is necessary to review not only the issues of its expansion and improve its operation methods, but also to review the veto right, interaction with the General Assembly and other UN bodies”.
