Almaty has become the first city to submit its application for hosting of the Winter Olympics-2022, Vesti.kz reports. The application was submitted to the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in London on August 16, 2013. Kazakhstan’s competitors are Quebec, Lvov, Toulouse, Harbin, Munich, Barcelona, Krakow and Oslo. This is the third time Almaty submits its bid. First the first time it was a candidate for the Olympics-1994 hosting. The Olympics were held in Lillehammer, Norway. Then Almaty took part in the bidding for hosting of the Olympics-2014. Russian Sochi won the bid. After reviewing all the applications the IOC will cut the number of the participating cities at its discretion. The second stage will start in January 2015. During that stage each city will have to present their projects of sport facilities and infrastructure for hosting of the Games. On July 31, 2015 the host city of the Olympics-2022 will be announced at the special OIC meeting in Kuala-Lumpur. “This is just the first stage where we express our willingness to host the Games,” Vice-President of Kazakhstan’s National Olympic Committee Pavel Novikov said. “Starting from the second stage we will have to work more seriously on the application. We believe we have good changes of getting to the second stage.”
